Letter from John DunnJohn Dunn - RACAS Rider

Hello, my name is John Dunn. I am a former foster child. I lived in foster care for sixteen years and I am now the founder and volunteer executive director of the Foster Care Council of Canada, an organization whose mission is "Involving current and former child-welfare service clients and their supporters in the process of improving the transparency and accountability of child-welfare services through a strong and united voice".

Bicycle Ride from Ottawa to Windsor in 2010
As such, I am embarking upon a bicycle ride from Ottawa to Windsor Ontario in an effort to increase public awareness of the need for Transparency and Accountability of Children's Aid Societies through improved internal, external and ministerial oversight.

Raising funds before the ride will enable us to have the following items to ensure the ride's success in the summer of 2010.

  • a vehicle, driver, and fuel for 11 days to accompany John along the ride and return him home

  • a large banner mounted to the vehicle promoting the RACAS website which will educate the public about the need for accountability of Children's Aid Societies in Ontario, the many associated issues, and related Internet based resources and web sites

  • food and lodging for both John and the driver of the vehicle along the 10 day ride

  • information packages for distribution along the ride which will educate the public and professionals about the need for accountability of Children's Aid Societies in Ontario, associated issues, and websites.

(This goal could be achieved with $1,000, $500, $100, $50, $20, or even $10 donations and corporate sponsorships by June 2010.)

The banner clad vehicle accompanying John along the roadside will drastically improve the visual profile of the ride, therefore increasing both public and media awareness of the need for accountability of Children's Aid Societies in Ontario

Aside from the pre-ride fund-raising, the ride itself will also attempt to attract individuals or corporations and organizations who would be willing and able to finance potential legal actions which will have as their goal, to bring accountability to child welfare services generally across the province such as seeking orders from the court requiring the Ministry of Children and Youth Services to properly monitor Children's Aid Societies as is their duty, and more.

(The Council is not a registered charity as doing so would limit our ability to perform advocacy, therefore donations do not get reimbursed from the Government in your tax return)
